Florence Bunday Soprano
Florence Bunday is an English soprano based in Glasgow. She was born in London and moved to Lytham in the North of England in 2012. She dates her love of music back to being 3 years old and feels fortunate that her primary school in London always recognised and prioritised the importance of music education. This is something that she perceives to be incredibly important and feels all children should have access to. At primary school she started piano lessons, but while always passionate about music and singing, Florence didn’t have any formal vocal training until she was 14, when she began studying with soprano, Nicola Howard. This fuelled her love of classical music and she auditioned for the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) when she was 17 years old and was delighted to be offered a place on the Vocal Performance course.
Now in her fourth year, studying with mezzo-soprano, Linda Ormiston, Florence has undertaken opportunities both through the RCS, and externally. She has recently appeared on BBC Scotland’s Reflections at the Quay on Christmas Morning and Easter Sunday, singing with the RCS Chamber Choir. She has also enjoyed roles in various operatic scenes, including Cherubino from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro with Preston Opera, and Virtu from Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea and Mustardseed from Britten’s Midsummer Night’s Dream with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. She was honoured to have been selected to attend an intensive week at Drumlanrig Castle, with renowned mezzo-soprano, Karen Cargill, where she had the opportunity to perform in a recital in the castle’s own drawing room. Outside RCS, Florence is a keen, aspiring recital performer, and has performed at venues such as Lytham Hall, St Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Glasgow, and the Wellington Church in Glasgow.
She has also started working with the Paragon Ensemble, helping to conduct workshops in Glasgow for people with additional support needs, and believes the arts should be available and explorable for everyone. She has also completed a foundational online course in audio description and has started learning BSL.
Florence also believes in using her love of music to make musical education, especially in classical music, more accessible to young people. As of 2024, she is a Creative Learning Ambassador for the Benedetti Foundation and has found this experience incredibly enriching for her development musically and professionally. It has given her the confidence to pursue more opportunities in community music and in teaching. She hopes to use this newfound knowledge to help her achieve her passion to make the arts and musical education more accessible.
